This is just a conditions update from this morning (Sunday, 10/12)
We have hiked around this area a few years in a row and like to start at the Slate Peak PCT Trailhead to minimize the miles we make our kids hike.
Based on the weather forecast (thanks for the direct link, WTA), we knew there would be about 2-4" of snow accumulation the previous night + 3-5" over the day, but we wanted to check on the larches, enjoy the "fun" of the dirt road, and maybe let the kids play in the snow.
Snow started light accumulation about 7 mi from Slate Peak, but there had been enough traffic that travel was fairly easy for our vehicle (high-clearance AWD).
Starting at the Hart's Pass campground there was significantly more snow on the road with a couple inches in the small parking lot at the PCT TH. The trail had several inches of snow (not enough to posthole yet, but enough that most of the brush was covered).
Larches were lovely dusted in snow, but we just did a short walk through the snow to one of the little groves and turned back. It was quite cold due to the wind!
Saw several hunting groups (including one guy walking on the road in front of his friends' car) out so if you're hiking, esp away from the PCT, would recommend orange/bright colors.
