Intermittent snow and ice began almost immediately. Higher up there was mostly snow but it was compacted and not more than two inches on the sides of the trail. In the afternoon it warmed up considerably making the snow easy to walk on and melting most of the snow in the last mile. Microspikes would have helped in the morning. The sky was clear with outstanding views of Adams, Hood, St. Helen’s, Rainier, Baker, and Glacier.
