Farrel-McWhirter Trail — Monday, Oct. 27, 2025

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area

Quick walk around the Farrel-McWhirter and neighboring Juel park trails this morning after being cooped up the last couple days due to the storms.  Hope everybody weathered them ok.  Parking is free and plentiful at both the main southern lot and the north lot.  There is a single functional sanican at the north lot and full restrooms south behind the farm buildings.  As to be expected given the recent weather there are quite a bit of branches and several trees down.  Nothing completely blocking and there was already a parks dept crew out tackling a huge chunk of big leaf maple that had busted off in the wind.  Otherwise the trails are in really good shape and the recent work done on several of the bridges looks really nice, kudos.

The fall color is starting to get really nice with the big leaf and vine maples.   There are some mushrooms starting to surface now as well.  Not much wildlife out, just some small birds and a single very groggy garter snake trying to catch some sun.  Also, spent a fair bit of time in Juel next to Bear Creek which is a salmon spawning stream, but nothing to be seen right now.  However the farm animals were all out looking a bit frazzled after the stormy weekend.  The pig was pretty cranky but the chickens and cow said hello.  A nice easy little walk with lots to see if you are in the area.
