Trip Report

Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve — Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2025

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area

This was a pleasant stop on our way back from a few hours spent in White Rock, BC. We walked the trail only to where the trail drops down to the beach because we were pressed for time. The trail to that point is wide and flat with boardwalks in places that cross wet areas. There are several viewpoints along the bluff, each with a memorial bench hewn and polished from what looks like local greenstone. The big treat on this walk were the stunning fall colors. It had finished raining when we arrived. We noticed a variety of mushrooms and a couple banana slugs crossing the trail. We caught a fleeting glimpse of a "black" squirrel, which is the black phase of the introduced eastern gray squirrel. The black phase is apparently common in the general area. A pair of ravens entertained us with their croaking calls (video).

We were the only people walking this trail on a late afternoon. I would expect far more people in spring and summer. There is ample parking in a large gravel lot. I believe there is a porta-potty here but we did not investigate.
