Mud Mountain Dam - Rim Trail, Mud Mountain Dam - River Trail — Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Mud Mountain Dam River Trail

Stats: 7.3mi, 594ft elevation gain, 3.5hours to complete

What a beautiful morning to check out a new trail! I met up with some other Mountaineers at the road parking lot at 8:00am, we were the only cars in the lot. The gate to the park was closed, but that was fine since we weren't going in that direction. The weather stayed partly sunny the entire time and got up to 55 when we left.

We took the Rim Trail, a service road, and the River Trail to Scatter Creek, where we had a snack and turned around. We realized looking at a map later that we could have crossed the creek and gone further, but that's a trip for next time! The trails were in good condition with a few blowdowns that were easy to step over. The River Trail was muddier than the Rim Trail and both had rocks and roots that were covered by the fallen leaves. There are a two spots with a bit of elevation gain, but they're pretty moderate. I'm definitely planning on coming back!
