Some previous trip reports noted the hiking guide entry needed corrections and updates, so I hiked the trail on a mild day in November with that in mind (HG should be updated soon). I didn't hike all the way to Fry Road (the other TH mentioned in Best Desert Hikes) because it gets tedious to hike on the angular basalt ballast. Three miles each way, plus another ~1 mile through the tunnel and back was enough for me and my feet.
After my hike, I drove down to the Snake River to check out other segments of the Columbia Plateau Trail State Park. I didn't find any good access (I didn't look all that hard, to be honest), and I think the RR trestles in that region haven't been modified for safe passage on foot. Maybe someday! Windust Park is a nice place, and even had an open toilet, unexpected this time of year.
I've previously hiked part of the CPT closer to Pasco, and its that same angular basalt.
