Beautiful trip up to the summit of Round Mountain with Aferrenberg and another peak bagging friend who had decided to do this same hike at the same time this morning. I guess great minds think like! haha!
Segelsen Road(NF Road 18) is snow free until about 2 miles from Deer Creek Pass where the hike begins on an old abandoned road. After about a 1/4 mile look for some flagging on the right. This is where there Round Mountain trail begins. The first part of the trail was hard to find in the snow at times with all the small twigs and a few trees down across the trail, but we were able follow some bear tracks that showed us the way!! Also having a previous track helped with navigating the snow covered trail. Maybe 3-4 inches of snow throughout the forest.
Once we got out to the open and made the final ascent up to the summit we put on snowshoes, as we felt it was easier the cross the partially snow-covered talus, as there were many voids in between the rocks. Views really opened up once we were out of the forest.
Views from the summit were sweet on this bluebird day. The three of us had a long summit stay before heading down.
Great trip! We started at 9:30am and finished at 3:00pm. 5 miles with 2360ft gain

Why did you skip Orbital this time? Timing considerations? Already been? Conditions looked dicier? Something else? Debating how far I'd want to go

I can’t speak for KWH, but it looked kind of annoying yesterday from the summit getting down to Orbital. With all of the potential holes concerns too, I wasn’t interested in heading that way either..
