Trip Report

Goat Mountain — Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
Dock Butte and Shuksan

This a trip report is for the Goat Mountain up by the Baker Lake area, not the hike off of 542 and Hannegan Pass Rd . We parked at a nice spot just off the Baker Lake Road on the gated logging road. This road is just across the Baker Lake Road from the Grandy Lake Campground entrance.

Aferrenberg and I got started at 8:35am hiking the logging road. Most of this hike is mostly on a logging road. First part is on an active logging road before becoming a decommissioned road higher up. Having a previous GPS track was very helpful in taking the correct road on up with the numerous junctions.

Up higher on the decommissioned road there are a series of tank traps. Many of these are clogged with slide alder, and the ones higher up are filled with streams, and are quite deep.

Up around 3900ft we left the road and headed up the ridge in the forest. Due to the very low snow coverage(4”), we had a bit of a bushwhack with the small trees and huckleberry bushes. It really wasn’t that bad. We brought snowshoes, but didn’t use them.

The summit has some beautiful 360 degree views.  Spectacular views of The Sisters, Baker, Shuksan, Blum, and many other North Cascade peaks. We spent a good amount of time up there, before heading down.

We took the same way down, arriving back at the car at 4:05pm. 12.9 miles with 3980ft gain

Always enjoy your trip reports! Clarifying question: your report links to the Goat Mountain hike off of 542 - Hannegan Pass Rd. But your narrative indicates the hike is off of Baker Lake Rd?

(There are so many Goat Mountains and Green Mountains in WA state. Confusing! Maybe WTA doesnt have an entry for the Baker Lake Goat Mtn?).

kidz won't hike on Goat Mountain

There is not a landing page for this trip. Both of these Goat Mountains are in the Mount Baker region, which does makes it confusing. I believe there is 26-27 Goat Mountains/Peaks in Washington State alone!
