Brought an out of town guest here for a bit of big bird watching. He was not disappointed with the six plus eagles we saw, one very close up perching in a trail side tree. On the drive in/out we also checked off a field of snow geese and groups of swans. We parked at the first (on the right) of the two parking areas. That one offers a nice covered barn area with wildlife maps on the far wall and picnic tables. The newer lot to the left has much better outhouses, but no tables or shelter.
First we walked the packed gravel dyke all the way to the west end where the track is blocked by a closed gate. Then we back tracked and took the dyke path headed south almost all the way to the end a bit beyond the tree with the eagles nest. Once we met a mud patch where the path narrows we turned around. The views out across the water were simply amazing. The clouds were too low for far mountain views but the play of light between them and the water made for stunning vistas. Not too cold or windy.
Our mileage was shy of four, the perfect length for a winter's day out. Last time we were here the slough had low water and muddy sections - but lots of herons fishing, this time the tide was still coming in so only a few herons but gorgeous reflections.
