Trip Report

Alger Alp (South Route) — Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
View from the trail's end

A friend and I hiked up Alger Alp on a pretty Thursday morning. Arriving to the trailhead around 7:45 AM, we only encountered two other people on the trail for the duration of our climb. Parking for the trailhead is little more than a gravel shoulder just off the road. It's easy to drive by (which we did, in fact, do), but seems to have ample space for the amount of foot traffic this trail gets.

We found navigation for the trail to be fairly straight-forward, and the directions listed on WTA only served to hinder more than help. The path is more or less a wide gravel road, and whichever fork seemed the wider and more obvious choice was, in fact, the way we needed to go.

As I mentioned, the trail's previous usage as a service road is pretty apparent, but it was still nice to be outside. The view at the top is surprisingly stunning. Based upon the trail, we were not expecting anything too grandiose at the end. Mist blanketed parts of the valley and only enhanced the view, in my opinion.

All in all, this is a great and fairly easy hike, but if you're more interested in the journey than the destination, this is not the hike for you. Overall, I give it a solid 3 stars.
