Trip Report

Mount Ellinor — Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal

Intrigued by the appearance of a mysterious fiery orb rising in the eastern sky -- something not seen in these parts in a long time -- I decided to capitalize on the weather and take a jaunt up Ellinor, where I was rewarded with a bluebird, five-volcano day.

The road and trail are both in great condition. There is a tiny amount of snow on the trail, but only in the very final bit as you circle around the summit block just below the top. It's nothing to worry about.

Despite a pretty full lot at the upper trailhead (where the bathroom is not open), the trail never felt crowded. Note that there was a car break in at the parking area. It seemed recent -- glass fragments on the ground -- but it's the same Ford Taurus that has been there for a year, with a "move this vehicle or else" sticker on it, which itself has been there for at least six months.

I was wondering whether the recent downpours would have caused major damage to the trail, but it really was pretty close to perfect the entire way. The road was maybe a little worse for the wear, but that being said, it's still in better shape that it has often been in recent years.

Now back to your regularly scheduled rain . . .

Traces of snow just below the summit.
Mount Baker.
Olympus, with scarring from the Bear Gulch Fire in the foreground.
