This is my second trip here, and first time pushing past the summit to get to the North Peak. It's not difficult or far- just about an extra half mile, and is at nearly the same elevation.
The road in is fine, mostly paved even, but be aware of ice in early morning (I almost ended up in a ditch). There is a little of melting ice still at the trailhead parking area. I arrived this morning to an empty lot.
Intermittent snow begins just after the initial 2m/2000ft ascent up the forested switchbacks. By time you reach the higher sloped switchbacks leading to the ridge, the trail is entirely snow covered. I brought traction (microspikes, snowshoes) but was able to hike this section in just boots with trek poles.
As recently reported, the ridge itself has snow here and there, but it's not difficult to traverse. Views today were incredible. Saw just 6 other hikers-although this weekend might be busier with the excellent weather forecasted.
I had a thought to explore down to Silver Lakes as a side trip but ran out of time.
