Note, GM-4 is closed to vehicle traffic in the winter, so really nice for winter hiking.
We parked at the GM-4 gate, where there were 4 other cars and hiked with friends and their dog. (During the week if we come this way we're the only car.) GM-4 criss-crosses Wild Cat trail several times and most people (and motobikes) stay on Wild Cat.
Head up GM-4, then switch to GM-3 at the signage for the horse camp - which shows Gold Mtn Trailhead 4 miles to the S/GM-4 gate 2 miles to the N. Green Mtn horse camp (which has a clean, stocked outhouse) is just about 1/2 a mile further, past a rock quarry. Continue around on GM-3 for spectacular views of the entire Olympic front from Ellinor in the S up to Mt Walker in the N.
No one seems to come to this side of Green Mountain so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Really nice weather. Sat on a bench in the sun at the horse camp for lunch, and along GM-3, crossing the Beaver Pond trail and eventually following GM-50 and an extension of Beaver Pond back to the horse camp and down to GM-4 gate.
Only saw 2 mtn bikes, a bunch of children where we crossed the Wild Cat trail, and no motorbikes.
Great day. GM
I would note that if you use a trail app, such as GaiaGPS, you'll see there's a lot to explore on this side of Green Mountain and few people come this way. This is an excellent winter hike. The road(s) would likely be hot and dusty in the summer.
