Trip Report

GM-1, Green Mtn State Forest — Friday, Jan. 23, 2026

Note: GM-1, the road to the Green Mtn Horse Camp is closed in the winter (and on summer weekdays).

On this trip we walked the 4 miles up to the horse camp.  I suspect there's a good bit of fall color on this route. We headed up the main road, noting that GM-23 probably connects with the maze of trails around the little hill north of Green Mtn. (GM-42)

We did try old GM-1, but the beaver pond has expanded to cover the trail too deep for our boots, so backtracked and walked up a section of Beaver Pond trail which runs along the ridge above the beaver pond.  I don't know if that is always the case.  Looks as tho some intrepid mtn bikers have gone through!

The beaver pond trail is gorgeous and perfectly passable with expected roots, lumps and bumps, but since we wanted to make time we mostly stuck to the main road.

Stayed on main GM-1, switched to GM-3 and continued to the horse camp where we sat in the sun and ate lunch.

Really nice day!
