Middle Fork road is indeed open, just down to one lane for a couple short sections. There were a few patches of black ice on the way to the trailhead this morning, and they had not melted out by 1:30 pm when we left. The bathroom is unlocked.
We hiked 3.5 miles in and turned around. The biggest hazard is ice, both right after crossing the bridge where it is usually icy and along the trail. There are several large patches of black ice on the trail. Don’t ask how I know this. Poles and microspikes are recommended.
Overall, this was a beautiful hike with several sections covered in gorgeous frost crystals. We saw lots of hair ice as well. An enjoyable outing.
