Trip Report

Padilla Bay — Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Estuary and old building at Padilla Bay Shore Trail

From end-to-end the trail in 2.15 miles. The smaller south parking lot is right at the end of the trail. The north parking lot is up 2nd Street, about 0.2 miles from the trailhead. As others have noted the trail is flat, smooth gravel. Other users were well separated. The day was overcast so distant views were obscured. In the foreground were plenty of birds to admire.

I am far from an expert, but I could pick out hundreds of Northern Pintail, a lesser number of Green-winged Teal and Mallards, several Great Blue Herons, a couple of Bald Eagles, a Northern Harrier, a killdeer and an assortment of birds that were too small and too fast for me to identify. There was a higher concentration of birds along the southern half of the trail.

[About five miles north, at the Samish River Wildlife Area, a Short-eared Owl was performing. There were also thousands of Snow Geese, several pairs of Bald Eagles, and countless smaller birds.]
