Thunder Creek — Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Forest fire at Stehekin re-routed us to Thunder Creek for a quick overnight. Started late, at 4 pm and arrived McAllister Camp (6 miles) at 7:15 pm. What a beautiful trail. Massive trees, beautiful bridges and a roaring river (creek) throughout. The gentle but persistent grade wore us out. We opted for the McAllister horse camp, which is a quarter mile closer than the backcountry camp. Only one other group at the camp. The next morning we checked out the backcountry camp, which is much closer to the river and we recommend highly. Wild raspberries in the first half mile. Not much wildlife, but the soaring peaks with glaciers, the river and the old growth forest compensated for the loss.
