Hannegan Pass and Peak — Friday, May. 20, 2011

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
Avalanche at 1.5 miles past Goat Mtn. trailhead
Thought I'd take advantage of the beautiful day by seeing what the Hannegan Pass road was like. A nice drive to about 1 mile past the Goat Mountain trailhead, then it's snow. Parked and hiked up the road thru mostly snow with some bare patches. At .5 miles (1.5 past Goat Mountain trailhead) a pretty large avalanche had come down from the east, crossing over Ruth Creek and and up the slope carrying some pretty good sized trees and lots of rock onto the road and the upslope on the west side of the road. The debris field is about 100+ feet wide. It's passable for a hiker but will take some heavy equipment to clear it. At .5 mile further up the road a avalanche came down on the West side and is about half way across the road. Not much rock but a couple of pretty good sized trees. Went another .5 miles up the road and got to a point where small snow slides had come down from the West and the snow was 8 to 10 feet deep and rough to travel so I called it quits. All in all a nice hike but it will be a while before we have road access to the Hannegan Pass/Peak trailhead
