This was the first backpack trip my friend had ever been on and I have to say, what a great trip to take beginner backpackers! The first 6 miles of the trail is such a nice gentle grade following the river, crosses cascading streams and small waterfalls.
We took the small side trail up to Otter Falls at mile 4.5 off to the left. It was very short and very worth it. There is a knee high rock cairn off to the left to let you know you're there.
The last 2 miles were a bit rough on my friend but he soldiered on and we made it to the lake in just under 5 hours. There was some snow just as you got to the lake but nothing bad at all. The first camp spot was still marshy and wet but would be alright with a footprint, I'm sure. But we hiked up to the top of the hill for the high ground camp.
Later, I bushwhacked around and found a camp below the trail to Lake Dorothy that was a dry spit with 280 degree views of the lake. I would have moved there but some guys had just came over the hill after me with their packs on and claimed it.
The next day was a bit socked in but we mad great time on the way back to the car in just about 4 hours. I will most likely do this hike again but maybe push the 5 more miles to Lake Dorothy.
Have fun. Hike safe.
