Trip Report

Iron Goat Trail — Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West
We should have started our hike earlier, we got to the trail head at Martin Creek and hiked to the Iron Goat Interpretive Site on the hottest day of the year so far! (There were many bugs, we doused ourselves more than once to fend them off.) We covered a total of 5.5 miles round trip with a 4 and a 5 year old. This hike is nice since there are many natives growing, blooming and to have our kids learn about this piece of history is priceless. Now to the logistics: this stretch of the hike was interesting, the old railroad relics were gorgeous. The old tunnels really peaked the imagination of our children. The trail was very well maintained, clean, dry and free of any type of debris. There were many place in the sun and shade to sit on benches and rest with the kids but NO restrooms except at the beginning and end of trails so 2 hours in, we had to make use of our portable toilet for the kids. On a cooler day we would have taken less than the 4 hours required to make the round trip but we stopped a lot for water breaks and to wet ourselves once or twice from small waterfalls. If you are determined, an all terrain stroller can make it the length of this piece of the trail no problem.
