Trip Report

Dewey Lake — Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
View of Mt. Rainier on the trail to Dewey Lake
Four of us did an overnight hike to Dewey Lake to watch the Perseid meteor shower. The wildflowers are putting on a fantastic display right now. The only wildflower I know that we didn't see was shooting stars. We saw avalanche lilies, tiger lilies, elephant heads, and a lot more. The trail to Dewey Lake is completely snow free. We day hiked around the lake after setting up camp and found a few patches of snow on that trail, but they will probably be gone soon. The trailhead and the first 2/3 of the trail were both very crowded, but there really weren't that many people at the lake (the camp sites are spaced pretty far apart). This is a great trip in terms of effort and driving time vs. reward. We did get chewed on by some bugs, but managed to avoid them by hiding in our tents and putting on rain shells. Happy trails!

camp sites

When the trail reaches the lake it forks. We took the right hand fork and stayed in the first campsite on the left (lake side) of the trail. It was fine for three tents. If you go left at the fork there is another campsite that looked to be closer to the lake and a bit bigger than ours. Happy trails!
