I have hiked Maple Pass loop a few times but have never made it to that one amazing blue lake you can see in the distance after just 2 mi counter-clockwise on the trail. This time the Team decided to scramble over boulder and scree fields to Lewis Lake and make our camp there.
The hike to the lake is definitely harsh. We didn't see a steep dirt trail to the very right and instead hiked over boulders which was very hard. There are some cairns but they are small and are hard to see.
The area around the lake is so beautiful, absolutely stunning! I wish we had more time there so we could hike to Wing Lake and wander around. The lake is cold but swimmable and there is one excellent camp spot near the lake.
Didn't encounter any wildlife, not even bugs. Wildflowers are beautiful still and I don't remember any snow crossing. Perfect hike!
P.S. Bring hiking poles if you're hiking to Lewis Lake. Still no berries.

Directions
To get to the trailhead drive on Hwy 20 east until you drive to the east side of N Cascades and the parking is at Rainy Pass parking lot. Hike counter-clockwise for about maybe 2mi and once you see Lewis Lake (you won't miss it, trust me) follow social trails through the meadow. After the meadow the trail hugs the right side of boulder fields but eventually you have to climb over boulders and scree. Pretty rough terrain but the lake is sooooooo worth it! I'd say it's mile to mile and a half from where you depart Maple Pass Loop to the lake.
Hope this helps. Happy trails!
