We arrived at around 11 AM under partly cloudy skies. There were about 6 parking spaces left, sort of expected for a weekday. The trail was in very good condition, with a few spots of mud. A minor problem, I did need to help my wife up onto and down off of some of the wooden stair cases as the ground below the lowest step had eroded quite a bit. One could also walk along the dirt on the side of the stairs until it becomes easier to reach the stairs or ground. This condition provides an excellent opportunity for trail maintenance.
We met about 30 people on the trail and found only two people at the falls. We enjoyed the relative solitude.
The falls were running hard with plenty of runoff from up river. They were spectacular! Be sure that you go to all three vantage points. The first is the wooden staircase to the right as you approach the falls. It leads to a safe platform for viewing. The next is on the bridge above that crosses the river and the third is about 100 yards farther along the trail and provides a view of the upper falls.
We saw only Robins and one chipmunk. The air was mild and clean.
All in all, a great first hike of the season!
