Hike in was easy going. After the wilderness boundary sign and past the meadows. Is a non maintained boot path that takes alittle route finding at times. Flag your own route if you have to don't trust the other markers you may find. There are some amazing views of the Sherman Peak/ Crater. Most of the trail is a mucky mess. So good boots are a must. I camped in the meadows past the wilderness sign. Keep watch not to smash the toads! There are hundreds of them in the meadow. I made it to the last scramble up the lava cliffs with the rope someone left to help out. I have my 7 year old Shepard mix with me and I wasn't going to torture him trying to make it on to the ridge. It would have been no problem by myself. But again im young and welcome a good rope climb. I was plenty satisfied with the scenery below the ridge. Didn't see many people out there.. Just a few climbers looking to summit the crater. Most turn around at the boundary sign. I liked the non maintained feel of the trail. Unlike some trails ive hiked that have wooden steps embedded into the ground the entire way. First hike on baker this year. The biting flies are out in full force. Also the trail was snow free all the way to the ridge.
