Trip Report

West Fork Dosewallips River — Sunday, Jul. 21, 2013

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
We took our commuter road bikes, with tires that are not as fat or treaded as mountain bike tires, but wider than racing tires, and rode (mostly) the 5.1 miles to the NPS trailhead. We will not do that again and would recommend mountain bikes as some of the gravel is fist-sized or larger and some of the road/trail is not hard-packed. The first 5 miles is a steady uphill climb with nice views of the river and mostly shaded by large trees. Dose Falls was very full and beautiful. After locking our bikes to the closed and shuttered ranger station railing, we hiked the trail up to the W. Fork Dose bridge (about 2.5mi). If you love saprophytic plants this is the trail for you - pinedrops, pinesap, Indian pipe, candystick and gnome plants. Blue and red huckleberries were delicious and abundant alongside the trail - at least for now! The ride back to the car was mostly downhill and a bit dicey on these thinner tires in areas where the gravel was not hard-packed.
