Mailbox Peak - Old Trail — Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013

Snoqualmie Region > North Bend Area
The mailbox - it has a register and I have previously seen alcohol there.
Had a gorgeous sunny and calm but cold day (20 F at the trailhead). There was snow on the upper 50% of the trail. I did not use poles or microspikes for the hike up. Used microspikes on the way down and they were very helpful. I removed them after the snow ended. The summit itself was quite warm with the sunshine, though I have seen the summit be very cold on other days, especially when the wind is blowing. I was wearing thermals and a long sleeve shirt, but had to remove the thermals in the first 15 minutes because it felt very warm, so definitely carry warm clothing and gloves. Caution: I slipped much lower on the trail where there was an icy patch in the shade, but no snow around - so be on the watch for such spots.
Snow starts around the first clearing - you can see Mt Rainier to the right just before this point.
The upper exposed slopes - could be difficult in windy conditions
Mt Rainier with a lenticular cloud.
