Big Four Ice Caves — Monday, Jan. 13, 2014

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Walk up...
A nice quick adventure. Roads were good all the way up to the trail head. Once up, they have cleared about a bit of the entry to park, but the actual lot is still closed and snow covered. Headed up the trail, still covered for the most part in snow, but manageable in tennis shoes. Few areas with water crossing the path, but easily passable. Once at the top, views are spectacular. Be careful getting close to the cave, 4 minutes after taking pictures by the mouth of the cave and walking back, a very large chunk broke off and fell to the ground. Enjoy your hike!

Very dangerous.

You must be nuts. For decades the word has been out that you don't even go close to the Big Four ice cave. But to go inside it? Wow. Enough said.

Extreme danger

Wow. You said it yourself -- the cave collapsed just minutes after your exited. It is lucky you weren't squished while taking your photo. Similar collapses have killed others. Please take care and listen to the USFS signs that warn you to stay away from, off of, and out of the caves!
