Trip Report

Mount Dickerman — Tuesday, Jul. 29, 2014

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Climbed Mt. Dickerman today for my second time. The last time was in spring, so this visit I was able to experience the last two miles snow-free. This paid off in incredible displays of wild flowers for the last two miles to the top. Absolutely perfect weather and crystal clear at the summit. No clouds, no haze. Simply jaw-dropping views in every direction. Other than perfect conditions, I really don't have much to report. The entire trail is snow-free and in excellent condition. Not too many bugs and I didn't notice too many wild berries, except for some Thimbleberries at the TH. If you have not hiked this mountain, I highly recommend it if you are looking for a good cardio workout and mind blowing views. The trail starts out with about two miles of consistent switchbacks. The grade then lessens and leads you into alpine meadows flush with wild flowers. Absolutely gorgeous!! Do not be deceived though. Eventually the meadows guides you to the second set of switchbacks toward the summit. At this point, amazing views are to be had as you climb higher. Reach the summit and find several great spots to sit down and admire peaks that stare directly at you, including Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan, Glacier Peak, and so many others. Even Mt. Rainier pokes up and shows herself. Physically it is a challenge for an average hiker, but absolutely doable. There is no exposure and nothing technical whatsoever. The only danger is at the summit where there is a complete drop-off on the northern side of the peak.
