Mount Defiance, Ira Spring Trail - Mason Lake & Little Mason Lake — Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014

We did the Mount Defiance trail at the start of the month, stopping at Mason Lake and taking an unintended detour to Little Mason Lake as well. The trail to Little Mason Lake is quite muddy and overgrown, but is doable, especially in true hiking boots. We accidentally took this path thinking it would lead to Mount Defiance, but the real turn off for Defiance is another 1/4 to 1/2 mile farther up the main trail. This trail is well marked and clear of any hinderances, but boy is it steep. There are lots of wildflowers blooming along the Ira Springs Trail and in the meadows near the peak. We saw lots of dogs out (some that probably shouldn't have been) and the only issues with bugs we had was around Little Mason Lake. The rest of the season should be great up there, enjoy while you can! For large pictures and details go to my blog: http://ianfaulds.com/shots-and-stories/mt-defiance-round-two
