To tell the world, or to not tell the world....hmmmmm! So, this was my favorite hike this season......Yes, yes, I so loved the view of Blanca Lake last week....and damn proud I made it up......but it was hard with very little stimulation for my eyes before I got to the top! The Melakwa Lake hike had it all! Easy access from the highway, so my little Honda Civic (SUV..in my mind) car did not have to drive through a ton of potholes, gorgeous forests, varied inclines that kept me going, views of the valleys and meadows along the way, waterfalls...and best of all, a descent to the lake that was actually enjoyable! This hike is rated a 4, which I thought was fair...I still think Blanca is a 5.....huge difference between the hikes and will always be perplexed by that rating system!
Lots of rock hiking along the way, which may be tough for those with bad ankles, but truly just a wonderful hike. Jackson, my most favorite hiking companion and I got there at about 11 am..hit the top at about 1:45 and made it to the lake by 2.
I had one snappoo....a super fit chick showed me how to get to the right of the lake where no one was, and I ended up sliding down the other side about ten feet...of course, in my head it felt like 50 feet...so be careful...I struggled coming back also, and was scared to death holding on to tree limbs while trying to get back.
I still need to get over that other hikers are on the trail and when they hike in packs, they seem to constantly have to chatter....but I guess you cant always have everything!
Make this hike happen......try and do it on a weekday though......so glad I can hike weekdays!
