Got to trail head late (1PM) intending to hike 2 miles up to viewpoint, but decided on a whim to continue to Mt. Washington summit. As per other posts, there is no sign letting one know that they are headed to Mt. Wash, and the trail leaves from the south side of the parking lot NOT by the bathrooms. Nevertheless, continued up the Iron Horse Trail (IHT) westbound and found the small entrance to the trail (it is the first trail on the south side of the IHT. Not difficult to find, but was initially uncertain-got information from others hiking on the IHT.
The Mountaineers book suggests that this is a 12 mile hike roundtrip hike, but WTA site states 8.5 miles, which I believe is more accurate. It took me 2 1/2 hours to the summit, and 1 1/2 hours back.
The trail was in good condition, some fallen trees and small streams making the trail wet in spots, but very tranquil. It's a relentless uphill most of the way, with short runs of flat or downhill grades. Make certain to turn right about half way up, where a small sign on a tree indicates "MT. WA". It was a hot day, and had plenty (3L) of water for myself and my dog. Very few people on this trail, as opposed to some of the more popular hikes in the area. The view from the top is worth the effort. I did not know what to expect, and the few people that I met on their way down told me there was a surprise/reward at the top!
All in all, a wonderful, but difficult hike if one is not in hiking shape (me!).
