Short and easy enough for kids, Thunder Knob is a great place to watch the sun set if you're staying at Colonial Creek campground. The trail is simple enough that hiking back in the dark after sunset wasn't an issue for my wife and I. Some of the guidebooks mention the trail is wheelchair friendly but we found this to be iffy at best. They may be referring to the trail's condition before the 2003 washout. The beginning section of the trail is pretty rock and the log bridges crossing the creek near the 2003 washout had large steps and seemed too narrow for a wheelchair. There were also a few small trees across the path farther up. You can see some of the effects the washout had in a beautiful asphalt water fall when crossing the creek at the beginning of the trail.
