The boys and I only hiked in to Elkhorn campground, 1 mile. The trail was in great condition. All but the very first uphill which had some water running down part of the trail. Not a problem though. Also that same uphill to make it around the road washout is rather steep, especially for my 2 yr old. My 4 yr old had no problem and the dog didn't care. This is the same hike I did with my 8 yr old over 3 years ago for his first overnight. It is a nice short hike and the campground is excellent. Normally without a pack, they can go about 3 miles before it becomes dramatic, so this hike is short enough to allow them to shoulder some of the stuff. This time we had campground all to ourselves. The dog at 8 yes old was able to bring his own supplies on his back. I love the fact my boys really love the outdoors and look forward to and ask to go hike/camp.
