Seward Park — Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area

Walked the Seward Park trails on this late summer/early fall Sunday morning. Made a rough figure eight route to see all the interior and exterior loop trails. Total distance was about 5 miles including several back tracks in the interior to get to where we wanted to go. The water level perimeter trail is busy with walkers, bicyclists, families etc, but the interior trails are much less busy. This is a really nice, urban forest with some beautiful water views. Not a whole lot of old growth left, but there are a couple old firs along the central north/south interior trail and a good number of huge Big Leaf Maples and large Madrone. The best experience of the day - pointing out the local pair of big bald eagles as they made tight circles and played on the south end of the peninsula to a couple families who had never seen one. That first sighting of a real bald eagle never gets old.
just a handful of big, old growth Douglas Firs
lots of impressive old Big Leaf Maples just starting to turn with fall colors
the view northwest from the north end of the peninsula back to the I-90 bridge and downtown Seattle
