Trip Report

Dosewallips State Park - Maple Valley Loop — Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Phantom Creek
This 1.5 mile loop is in Dosewallip State Park right out of the campground. We headed out climbing along the Dosewallips River enjoying the fall leaves both in the trees and on the ground. Lots of moss and plenty of fungi for DrySiders to enjoy along the way. Signs of elk, but none spotted. Phantom Creek was particularly pretty-see picture. Several bridges over creeks and turnpike to keep feet dry. However once the trail leveled out and started circling the hill more than a few springs were running enthusiastically down the trail after the heavy rain the night prior. Nothing we couldn't slop thru and and still keep our boots fairly dry. As our elderly dog was tired we skipped both the Steam Donkey loop and a side trail to an old railroad grade and returned to the campground on the gravel road.
Pretty soggy trail!
