Trip Report

Mailbox Peak — Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014

Snoqualmie Region > North Bend Area
Does Federal law protect mail placed in this box?
We had planned a trip up Mailbox (new trail) two weeks earlier, and it just so happened that the day we picked was this season's first day of snowfall in the lowlands. Nevertheless, we determined to get out, figuring that we could just turn around if conditions on Mailbox were unpleasant. As it turned out, our trip up was quite nice. Snowing early in the day, and then clearing up as we proceeded. There was snow all the way from the lower parking lot to the summit, definitely getting deeper as we ascended. About halfway up we encountered spiders! Lots of them. Must have been some poor brood that just hatched, and was wondering where all the food was. Having made good progress, we figured that we would lunch and turn around at the junction with the old trail. After lunch we decided to hike a bit further uphill "just to warm up again", but that quickly morphed into "it's just a few more hundred feet" and we pushed on to the summit just as the clouds were breaking, opening up to views of snowy peaks and lowlands.
