We started out hike at the West Trailhead and really preferred it that way! The trail was muddy and rocky in a few areas, but no problem at all! We made the full roundtrip, about 8.2 miles and even found ourselves at Harrigan Point for a perfect picnic spot.
We saw lots of other hikers, bicyclists, kayakers, and even a couple of strollers - though parts of the trail can be problematic so I don't recommend using a stroller if you plan on going the full hike.
The lake gave gorgeous views and we encountered both of the old railroad tunnels and the bridge at Devil's Punchbowl. Two of our guys jumped in several times! It was super cold, but they had a blast doing it! The tunnels were so amazing to witness, though it's not recommended venturing inside (a few of us did anyway). Beware of falling rocks ad railroad debris inside the tunnels and along the trails. If you do this hike, be sure to check out the local history beforehand so you can appreciate the area even more!

We had 8 adults, and 5 children (ages 10, 5, 4, 2, and 1) on our hike and all of them did very well. The smaller two were in carriers.
