Trip Report
Rachel Lake, Rampart Ridge - Rampart Lakes — Wednesday, May. 20, 2015
Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass
First of all, the Forest Service road into the Rachel Lake TH is a pothole nightmare. It took me almost 20 minutes to go 3 miles. No joke.
The trail up to Rachel Lake was great. There were some trees down in the trail but nothing you can't get beyond. Some wildflowers are blooming but I would wait a week or two if you want the real deal. There was mud in spots and water, as usual, so I would not recommend hiking in tennis shoes. Once you get to the very top, near the lake, there are two snowfields you must get past. I had no problem, even though one was very steep. Just dig your heels and toes in tightly. There may be a way to bypass the snow, I wasn't really looking for one. The lake is completely thawed and beautiful!!
If you continue on up to Rampart Lakes, there is still a decent amount of snow in the trail between Rachel Lake and the point where you start climbing the ridge. Once you start gaining elevation quickly, the snow is all melted. But again, once you reach the top there is snow. I went all the way to Rampart Lakes and I think the entire way was snow. No postholing though, and there was a decent boot path. It may be possible to avoid some of the snow if you know the area well enough. Rampart Lakes are starting to thaw finally, slowly. There is nothing at all blooming yet up there. It might be a couple weeks, or three.
Alta Mountain looks good to go, as does Hibox. But take snow/ice gear just in case if you decide to climb them. I was only looking from afar.
I recommend poles and waterproof shoes. I took my microspikes but ended up not using them. Have fun, be safe!
