Trip Report

South Coldwater Trail — Sunday, May. 24, 2015

South Cascades > Mount St. Helens
Near the trailhead in the afternoon
There was heavy fog on the road to the trailhead at 9 am, but nothing unmanageable. Because of the heavy dew we soaked our socks in the grass on the lower portion of the trail, so bring a spare pair! The fog was very thick and dense until after noon when we took a lunch break on the switchback of trail 230. This gave us a very surreal feeling, almost like hiking in the clouds (or the back woods of Silent Hill) but it was enjoyable. We were lucky that the fog had cleared by the time we made it back to the trailhead, it allowed us to see all the beautiful scenery we had missed. It was kind of like getting two hikes in one! There were no obstacles in the path until we passed the trail junction and followed the Coldwater trail (230), then there were a few fallen trees that we had to scramble over.
Morning fog on the trail
