My daughter was supposed to meet a friend and hike in the Yakima Canyon, but when arrangements went sideways, I decided to treat her to some Black Canyon candy! This Central Washington hike on Umtanum Ridge never fails and, surprisingly, at many times of the year. Today, I wondered if it would to be all dried up for the season. But, to my great surprise, the canyon was still green and there were plenty of "pretties" blooming along the way! My "Pick of the Day".... the Western Blue Flax! It was our eye's delight! It lined the canyon trail from the start clear to beyond the old pioneer cabin. The tiny, delicate flowers on long dainty stems were fabulous! We hiked up to the road and rocks looking north toward the Stuarts, then climbed to the summit overlooking Selah and Union Gap. We counted three deer and many big, puffy clouds that tried to threaten us with a raindrop, but never did. From the summit, we bushwhacked our way through the sagebrush back onto the right-fork jeep track and returned to our car. It wasn't a bad way to celebrate the end of the school year... "Hello, Summertime!"
