Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Lake panorama
This trail is tough! We got here at 8am and didn't get back down until 3pm. The trail is narrow most of the way with some brush and tree growth obstructing the path. Not bad, but just be aware it's not an easy trail. There are 2 points where you have to do some bouldering near the end. It's not too difficult, but people with fear of heights might have a hard time. There are also 2 points where the trail was not very clear. 1. Right after bouldering up the headwall, look for a stick with a blue marker on your left. This is the trail. 2. Right after you reach the "pond" look for a stick with an orange marker. This is the trail. Speaking of the "pond" you'll reach this just a few minutes after clearing the headwall. This is NOT the lake. Don't let it fool you. Keep following the trail about 20 yards to the right and you'll see a make-shift bridge crossing the stream to your left. Continue on this trail over the next small hill and finally make the last push up the rocky canyon to get to the lake. (about 20-30 minutes after you reach the pond). The hike down is just a difficult as the way up. It's a beautiful hike with very few switchbacks. The trail just goes UP! We only encountered a group of 2 guys on our way up and 1 couple who had camped at the lake the night before, but on the way down, we passed by 7 other groups making their way up. Get there early if you want the trail and lake to yourself.
This is the pond, NOT the lake
Nat Park sign - almost to the lake
