Trip Report
Mailbox Peak - Old Trail, Mailbox Peak — Saturday, May. 9, 2015

I ended up on this trail because the road was closed before I reached the trail I originally planned to tackle. This one was tough! I decided to hike the Old Trail up and I can see why they built the new one. This is a scramble almost from the very beginning to the very top. The ground is mostly roots and rocks and maintains a constant steep pitch; sometimes the only way I could find the trail was from the blazes on trees. For such a difficult route it was still fairly crowded especially when it joined with the new trail at the top. It was a beautiful clear day with Rainier views at the top. I took the new trail back down which was far less difficult and more beautiful (in my opinion). I hadn't packed enough food or water, so don't make my mistake! It took me 7 hours round trip, including several breaks and a full hour of rest at the top.
