Trip Report

Heather Lake — Monday, Feb. 8, 2016

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
In order to miss any traffic down from Bellingham, we didn't leave until 9:30 and didn't arrive until around 11am. The road had some big potholes, but not so bad you couldn't avoid them if you really try. Trail is WET the whole way! Most of it isn't too muddy, but there's running water through most of the rocky footing. A good pair of waterproof boots and you won't even notice. About 1/4 mile (maybe) there are a lot of blow downs. And I mean a LOT. All are easily passable though, with enough room to go over or under comfortably. Snow started about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way in (and when I say snow, I mean ice). It's mostly avoidable early on, but at a certain point there's no getting away from it. I highly reccoment having some microspikes for your boots. There were some people we saw without them and they were having a really tough time navigating the icy trail (and staying on their feet). It was getting a little warm out and with the avalanche danger being moderate and being able to hear the slides from across the lake, we decided to nix the loop around. This was a beautiful hike and if you get the chance to get out there before the snow has melted I definitely recommend it!
