Trip Report
Shi Shi Beach and Point of the Arches — Friday, Feb. 19, 2016

The trail suffers from pretty bad drainage issues, and has some sections of really deep mud. Trekking poles and gaiters are helpful, but you probably won't make it through the first 2 miles without getting wet. Take your time on the descent, because the ground is pretty slick and the grade is about 45 deg coming down to the beach. Plenty of open places to camp and explore. Great weekend!

I want to camp here so badly but the permitting and reservation process is so daunting. How did you do it? Get a permit from the res when you are there? first come first serve or what? I wish it were easier, but perhaps i'm confused. Help! haha

Hi Prairiedahl82,
The permits are not too bad. You only need 2. We did self registration at the WIC in port angeles for the Olympic National Park Wilderness permit. If the WIC is open, they can help you too. You also need the Makah recreational use permit that can be found pretty much anywhere (site lists Makah Museum, Washburn’s Store and at the Makah Tribal Center). The last part if you are staying overnight is to park on a private home owner's lawn and pay their fee. (No overnight parking at the trail head) We drove to the trailhead, dropped off our gear, then drove back to the closest home with parking (about .6 miles, large open front lawn). They have a money drop box on their porch. Good luck!
