Trip Report

Sauk Mountain — Saturday, May. 7, 2016

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Snow free areas of trail
Trail head is not accessible by vehicle. Plan to walk 1/2 mile. The trail has a lot of rocks that tumble loose under foot and went tumbling down the mountainside while I was hiking, endangering those below. Also, much of the trail had actual rifts in the dirt where it appears a slide may happen (pic below). Shaded areas of the trail are deep with snow and at the last switchback the snowfield was absolutely impassable without crampons and ice ax. Butterflies and flowers and thunder chickens were a nice distraction from the dicey conditions.
