We hiked this trail today with my 7 year old and 10 year old. We didn't hit the trail until 10:45 and although the parking lot was full, the trail did not seem overly crowded. It took us forever to make it to the lake 3.5 hours, but we stopped a ton to play in the water and climb rocks. There are so many waterfalls and fun things to see.
Yes, the trail was very muddy in places and very wet in places. I hiked in my Vibram 5 fingers because I train for that and did not have any major problems. It was a Heavy workout for my feet and ankles though, so not for a new minimal shoe wearer at all. My kids both hiked in their minimal water shoes as well and it was fine for them. But again, we train for this. I don't recommend unless being a minimal shoe-wearer is your everyday thing. Yes, we were wet and muddy when we made it back, but because today was warm out (70) and it was not raining, we were fine.
I highly recommend this hike but be prepared for how hard it is. My kids were really tired at the end and I had to carry them at various points. There were not many young children on the hike, maybe 6 or so.
We hope to go back and spend a night at the lake.
