This is a spectacular short hike. Unfortunately, since part of the trail was destroyed in a flood several years ago, the trail has deteriorated from lack of maintenance. There are several blowdowns, but all are easy to step over. In the maze of new trails approaching the canyon, the ones nearest the river seem the best. The trail officially ends at 1.3 miles, but most hikers continue on to the tunnels. This requires crossing a moderately difficult rock slide, but then the trail continues along the old railroad bed with old timbers still embedded in the concrete. I would not recommend this trail for small children. This trail is worth the effort as the tunnels are interesting and the river in the gorge is amazing.
