First time on this trail. Worst part of road was from Barlow pass to the turn for FS 49. Lots of cars at the trailhead, but they must have been in the work crew. We saw very few people on the trail. Did the Red Mountain spur first. The Look out location looks like nothing more than a campsite with a fantastic view.
The trail peters out pretty quickly above it. Next we headed up the river. As indicated in the description, the forest is amazing! One of the finest examples of old growth forest I have seen. Perfect place for a wilderness fix. But there are only glimpses of the river. The trail maintenance reduced the number of people on the trail. The sign said there would be blasting! You have been warned. But for us less than 10 mile day hikers, it was perfect.
