We did this as an overnight backpacking trip. We hiked the 4.8 miles to Camp Mystery and spent the night there, not knowing the condition of the campsites up higher near the pass. After setting up camp, we hiked to the pass and Buckhorn Mountain. When we saw those views, we immediately regretted not camping there, even though there is no water source beyond Camp Mystery. There are plenty of campsites to choose from if you go exploring around the pass for a bit. Next time, we'll bring extra water and find a nice campsite where we can see the sunset and sunrise from our tent.
We wrote about our experience with lots more photos, here on our blog: http://www.zilcsak.com/blog/2016/marmot-pass-and-buckhorn-mountain
