I went up to the overlook (see picture) yesterday. beyond that there was a sketchy looking area where the snow was sliding. if you are going to go further than this, have avalanche experience right now, and of course exercise caution. The two people ahead of me also pointed this out.
It was in the low 40s when I left the trailhead at noon, with trail conditions being a hard icy crust on top of the snow lower down, turning to loose ice chunks later on. on the latter, I don't think micro spikes would be too helpful as they were deep and sliding around like large pebbles.
After the junction for Pratt lake/Olalie lake, snowshoes become pretty necessary. you could probably make it up without them, but you'd likely be sinking in and post holing everywhere. the overlook was beautiful, I took out my shovel and made myself a seat in the snow. I spent about 15 minutes enjoying the view, but I wanted to get down before it got dark.
